Since the beginning of the year, weather reports have displayed clearer geographical terms as the China Meteorological Administration has improved its forecasting capability.

The administration said that it has clarified terms that were once difficult for the general public to understand. For example, national meteorological service products now avoid using designations such as North China, East China or the Yellow and Huaihe rivers regions unless it is necessary to do so. Instead, forecasters use provincial-level regions' names to specify their weather conditions.

When extreme weather events occur, weather forecasters will describe places as cities and counties.

"Previously, the terms in weather reports were confusing, and only some professionals knew the exact areas being mentioned along, for example, the Yellow River and the Huaihe River. Many people might not have immediately understood while reading reports," the administration said.

"Thanks to more accurate forecasts, weather report terms that used to be vague have been made clearer so people can truly understand and use them," it said.
