Chongqing's super long escalator back in service
China's longest escalator has reopened to the public after undergoing four months of renovations in Chongqing.
The Chongqing Lianglukou Huangguan Escalator — 112 meters long, 1.3 meters wide and 52.5 meters high — runs at a speed of 0.75 meters per second on an incline of 30 degrees. Total time from top to bottom is 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Each side can carry up to 13,500 passengers per hour. It is Asia's second-longest single-grade escalator.
Connecting the city's Line 1 and Line 3 subways to Lianglukou Station and Caiyuanba Railway Station, the escalator is one of the municipality's iconic features, shuttling people up and down the slopes of the mountain city since it was completed in 1996.
Passenger Lan Ling, 66, lives on the upper end and usually takes the escalator to buy daily necessities on the lower end. It saves her a bus ride of at least half an hour.
