Beijing police have stepped up efforts to curb crimes related to people's livelihoods and have increased safety inspections to improve people's sense of security.

Since 2018, police from the city's Daxing district have prioritized environmental protection, food safety and public security, shuttering 337 illegal workplaces and detaining 606 suspects, the Beijing Public Security Bureau said last weekend.

In May last year, for example, the Daxing police detained five people suspected of illegally producing and selling diesel. The officers seized 16 metric tons of the oil and five modified vehicles, the bureau said.

They also revealed another case in the district in July, in which six people were captured after they allegedly harmed the environment by illegally stockpiling construction waste.

"The police took action to respond to public concerns and solve the problems that residents have been complaining about, especially crimes that have affected their lives or properties," the Daxing police said.

In Xicheng district, police have also attached great importance to resolving livelihood problems, particularly those concerning telecom and online fraud. They established a team specializing in handling residents' reports involving such fraud, aiming to nip the crimes in the bud.

Over the past three years, the Xicheng police have helped prevent financial losses of more than 1.55 billion yuan ($221 million), contributing to providing residents with a sense of security, according to the bureau.
