People embrace New Year across China

In Shanghai, 23-year-old Cui Qiaosen and his fellow workers were tying up steel bars at a construction site on the first day of 2023.

The project they're working on is the city's first municipal railway, which will stretch 68.6 km and slash the travel time between the city's two airports from 1.5 hours to 40 minutes.

"We want to catch up with progress before the Spring Festival, so we will have a worry-free holiday," Cui said.
