LAGOS -- At least 10 people were killed in an attack by armed bandits at a community in Nigeria's restive northern state of Kaduna, an official said Wednesday.

Scores of residents were injured while others fled their communities in the attack, which occurred Tuesday night in the Langson community of the state, Francis Sani, the council chairman, confirmed the attack to reporters in Kaduna.

According to him, the attackers invaded the community at around 9 pm, local time, shooting indiscriminately at everything in sight as well as looting shops in the area before they were repulsed by the anti-riot policemen.

He appealed to the federal and state governments to deploy more security to the area because of the recurring attacks on communities in the area.

Sam Achie, the national president of the Atyap Community Development Association, a community group, also confirmed the latest attack and urged the authorities to arrest the perpetrators. He hailed the police force for repelling the attackers while calling on members of the community to remain calm in the face of the attacks.

Armed attacks have been a primary security threat in Nigeria's northern and central regions, leading to deaths and kidnappings in recent months.
