Artist finds life philosophy rooted in waste
In the eyes of Yue Yadong, 75, tree roots are natural artwork.
The passionate root-carving artist in Shizuishan, Ningxia Hui autonomous region, has spent the last 40 years collecting and carving roots, finding philosophy in what many see as waste.
Yue once visited a relative and was attracted by a pile of firewood. While scavenging through the wood, he inadvertently stepped on a beehive, and angry insects stung him badly. His face swelled up and his eyes could barely open.
When he recovered, however, he returned and fetched many roots.
"Many of my root carving works came from that firewood. It was quite worth it," he said.
He said the carving process is irreversible, so he formulates a careful plan before starting.
"Each root carving is unique because of its original form," he said, adding that transforming waste into treasure "shows respect for life".
Yue's artwork is exhibited in Yinhe village of Shizuishan free of charge. He aims to spread traditional culture and attract tourists.
