White goose industry booms in Shulan

Benefiting from local government policies, farmers of Shulan, a county-level city in Jilin province, have seen the white goose breeding industry boom in recent years.

So far, the city's white goose population has reached 2.32 million, the local government said at a recent news conference.

"This year, the local government has accelerated the construction of a demonstration base for the integration of the white goose breeding and propagation industry, and strives to exceed 10 million by the end of 2023, with the comprehensive total output value reaching more than 1.5 billion yuan ($206.8 million)," said Luo Xudong, vice mayor of the city.

Shulan, which is under administration of Jilin city, has great advantages for the development of the white goose industry, such as 623.8 square kilometers of wetlands and an annual straw output of 1.2 million metric tons.

In 2021, the local government identified white goose breeding as a characteristically advantageous industry that can help the city bring money into the local economy. Thus they have set the development goal of building "China's largest white goose breeding county, China's largest white goose industrial park, the world's highest-quality white goose feather production base, and the world's largest goose breeding base".
