This handout satellite image courtesy of NASA's Earth Observatory taken on June 2, 2022, false-coloured to make it easier to distinguish the water, and released on July 13, 2023, shows the Severino reservoir near Mendoza, Florida Department, Uruguay, which is the main source of fresh water for the capital Montevideo and its surrounding area. Uruguay is frantically laying pipes and digging wells as it races to find fresh sources of precious water amid a record drought that has threatened to leave its capital without potable water. Water from the capital's main source -- the Santa Lucia River -- has had to be increasingly augmented with brackish water from the River Plate, an estuary on the Atlantic Ocean.
