Two theater productions from the upcoming Guilin Festival were staged in Edinburgh, Scotland on Aug 6, the first time events from the festival have been performed abroad.
Leading theater directors, Huang Ying and Zhao Miao, brought their latest productions to the Scottish capital: a modern theater adaptation of the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, which was produced by Huang, and a physical theater adaptation of German playwright Bertolt Brecht's Mother Courage and Her Children, which was produced by Zhao.
Both plays were performed as part of this year's Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and will later be performed at the Guilin Festival.
As the popular Chinese saying goes, "Guilin's landscape is the best beneath heaven". Located in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, the city is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country.
For its second year, the Guilin Festival will be held from Oct 27 to Nov 5, at both indoor and outdoor locations in different parts in the city, and will feature live performances, as well as screenings of domestic and international theatrical productions.
Co-organized by the Central Academy of Drama, the festival will also serve as a platform for programs under the World Theater Education Alliance, which was co-initiated by the Central Academy of Drama in 2015, and which aims to promote cultural exchange and the development of theater education around the world.
