Corrugated paper art reflects landforms of Shanxi

Wang Shuaidong has combined his expertise in decoration with his family's traditional paper craft to create innovative corrugated paper artworks.

The 39-year-old, who graduated from Luxun Academy of Fine Arts, owns a studio in the Wanbailin district of Taiyuan, Shanxi province.

The textured patterns of corrugated paper reminded Wang of the topography of the Loess Plateau in Shanxi, and he began work on a series of artworks featuring cultural landmarks of the province, such as the Yungang Grottoes, Wutai Mountain, Jin merchant compound and Hongtong Dahuaishu, or the Big Locust Tree.

Wang said the process of creating corrugated paper art involves multiple steps, including drawing, cutting, carving, gluing and trimming. One of his most intricate pieces took more than three months to complete. But Wang finds immense joy in his craft.

"Through the paper art, I not only promote our country's rich cultural heritage but also carry forward my family's tradition of craftsmanship," Wang said. "It can also raise awareness about the importance of recycling paper boxes and promote an eco-friendly mindset."
