No need to stockpile salt: China Salt Association

China has enough salt, so there is no need to stockpile salt and the panic salt buying behavior, affected by Japan's nuclear pollution, is unnecessary, CCTV reported on Friday, citing China Salt Association.

China's salt reserves are sufficient and production capacity is stable, which can fully guarantee salt supply, so the masses do not need to stockpile salt.

China's annual consumption of edible salt is basically maintained at about 12 million tons, and the production capacity of edible salt is 50 million tons, said Wang Xiaoqing, executive director of China Salt Association.

Moreover, China has established a relatively complete salt reserve system for the whole society, composed of government reserves and corporate social responsibility reserves, and have the confidence and ability to meet people's salt needs, Wang said.

In terms of salt production, China has strict national standards, and daily inspections and tests of radioactive substances in salt are carried out by professional monitoring organization recognized by the country.

Wang advises consumers to judge the situation rationally and purchase salt at a reasonable level.

China's salt industry resources and production capacity, quality safety and supply security mechanism, as well as salt reserve system, are well enough to meet the domestic demand for edible salt and ensure the salt supply in the domestic market, Wang said.
