China Salt Association said at present sea salt is safe, and called upon salt producers to maintain the market order and ensure the safety of the quality and supply of edible salt.

During a recent meeting, the association cited the information from the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and National Nuclear Safety Administration on their monitoring results between 2021 and 2023, there are no abnormalities in the activity and density of artificial radioactive nuclides in the seawater and marine creatures within the waters under China's jurisdiction. The activity and density are generally within the range of fluctuations over the years, said the association in a statement on Wednesday.

During the meeting, participants believed that the current production of salt using sea salt as a raw material is safe, and the salt purchased through legitimate channels in the market is also safe, according to the statement.

The association calls on salt industry enterprises to jointly maintain order in the market, ensure the quality and supply of salt, and protect the physical health of citizens.

Last week, anxious shoppers emptied the condiment from supermarket shelves and online retail platforms across the country, due to worries over Japan's discharging of radioactive wastewater.
