Chinese tech company Xiaomi Corp has unveiled its latest self-developed operating system, which will connect its smartphones and Internet of Things devices with cars, which they plan to release in the first half of next year.

The new system, called HyperOS, is set to reach consumers on Tuesday when its latest phones, wearables and TV sets begin sales in China.

Lei Jun, founder and chairman of Xiaomi, said in a launch event in Beijing on Thursday night the company's new strategy is building a smart ecosystem that connects humans, cars and home, and the HyperOS operating system marks a pivotal move to support the strategy.

According to him, it takes over 13 years of exploration and 7 years of research and development, with over 5000 engineers involved, to develop the system.

Lei said Xiaomi's cars are currently progressing very smoothly and will be officially launched in the first half of 2024.

The senior executive said Xiaomi will invest over 100 billion yuan ($13.7 billion) in research and development over the next five years.
