Meteorologist recalls loneliness, isolation of Arctic sojourn

With only two to three hours of daylight each day, the solitude, the feeling being closed in, made the time even more challenging.

During these periods, team members drew closer to each other, providing mutual support. They engaged in sports or worked out in the gym.

"We encouraged each other, supported each other and endured many endless nights together," Niu said.

Reflecting on what he gained from the expedition, Niu expressed the professional pride he carried as part of China's 39th Antarctic expedition team and for his contributions to the exploratory mission.

"For me personally," he said, "the year at Great Wall Station allowed me to experience a unique journey. It taught me how to face and enjoy solitude."
