LONDON -- Three people were killed and one was critically injured in a car accident near a shopping center in north London, the Metropolitan Police (Met) said on Monday.

Police were called at 11:26 pm on Sunday to reports of a road traffic accident that involved a car with five occupants at Staples Corner retail park near Brent Cross Shopping Centre, the Met said in a statement.

Three people were pronounced dead at the scene while the other two were taken to a hospital, with one in critical condition and the other's condition not life-threatening, it said.

The five people are all believed to be men aged in their early 20s, the Met said.

Inspector William Mcdonald, one of the officers responsible for policing the local area, said: "Emergency services responded last night to what seems to have been a terrible accident."

A police investigation is under way to establish the full circumstances.
