Japanese carmaker Nissan is to empower its vehicles with Chinese technology company Baidu's expertise in generative artificial intelligence, according to a memorandum they two signed on Thursday.

Nissan and Baidu have agreed to carry out research on AI and explore the feasibility of commercial cooperation. The Japanese carmaker will also use Baidu's AI solutions in its vehicles sold in China.

The move comes as Nissan is revving up efforts in its transition towards electrification, especially in China.

The Japanese carmaker has unveiled four new energy vehicle concepts and showcased a strong lineup of electrified models at the Beijing auto show that kicked off on Thursday.

It also announced that it will launch one more NEV in the market than previously disclosed, bringing the total of the planned vehicle launches to five by fiscal year 2026.

Nissan President and CEO Makoto Uchida said: "To achieve sustainable growth in the rapidly changing Chinese market, Nissan is committed to a China-tailored strategy as we announced in our new business plan, ‘The Arc'."

"Starting with new energy vehicles to be based on the concepts unveiled today, Nissan will build a balanced product portfolio of diverse and competitive new models. Our aim will be to provide a more exciting mobility experience to all customers in China," he said.
