In recent years, Wanshan district in Tongren, Guizhou province, has taken measures to protect and develop a mercury mine site, successfully transforming it into a tourist attraction.

The site was once the largest mercury industrial production base in China. Due to resource depletion, it closed in 2001.

The industrial site has a 970-kilometer underground tunnel and a complete record of the mining traces and mine culture, with distinctive characteristics from different periods.
