On Tuesday, China Mobile announced the official launch of its computing power center in Beijing, situated in Changping district.

The center is equipped with nearly 4,000 artificial intelligence accelerator cards — added to computing systems to enhance performance for specific workloads. It features a 33 percent adoption rate of domestic AI chips and boasts a computing performance of exceeding 1000 petaflops.

Computing power centers are high-performance computing devices distributed nationwide, characterized by robust processing and storage capabilities to handle extensive computing tasks and data processing needs.

In 2021, the State Council issued a development plan for the digital economy during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), emphasizing the acceleration of a nationwide integrated big data center system that integrates computing power, algorithms, data and application resources. It also proposed to set up computing power centers in areas such as the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region as part of the country's national integrated computing power network.

Guo Qi, deputy general manager of China Mobile's Beijing branch, emphasized the critical role of computing power in AI development. Guo said currently, China Mobile has 12 smart computing centers that have started operations across the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the Yangtze River Delta region and many others. Their total computing power capability has reached 17 exaflops.
