Arai, who has judged competitions — he once gave Japanese medal favorite B-Boy Shigekix an award as a child — agreed, starting with Maruyama as his sole elderly student early last year.

For motivation, Arai suggested that Maruyama join the children he teaches in a performance that would be held at a community center last spring.
