The Nutcracker — A Hong Kong Adventure directed by Septime Webre, artistic director of the Hong Kong Ballet, received the prestigious Star of Outstanding Award at UNESCO's 2024 Global Awards for World Heritage Education Innovative Cases.
This significant accolade celebrates the company's dedication to reimagining a renowned masterpiece by infusing it with Hong Kong's cultural essence and iconic landmarks through innovative storytelling.
"We will continue creating inspiring works that promote our beloved city by reaching a larger audience overseas and online while encouraging the people of Hong Kong to have a deeper appreciation of their heritage and culture," said Webre.
Filled with lively dancing, sparkling sets and costumes and Tchaikovsky's timeless music, the ballet follows Clara, Fritz and the Nutcracker Prince as they embark on a magical adventure through a snowy bamboo forest, battling the villainous Rat King and encountering a host of whimsical characters.
In the opening scene, 21 paintings from the Hong Kong Museum of Art are on display in a glamorous ballroom where the main character Clara's family hosts a Christmas Eve party.
The Nutcracker will return to the Hong Kong Cultural Centre's Grand Theatre in December for three weeks.
