The number of new energy vehicles owned by individuals in the Xizang autonomous region at the end of June exceeded 10,000 units for the first time, a significant milestone in the region's efforts to promote green vehicles, according to data from the region's traffic management authorities.

The 2023 Environmental Bulletin from the Xizang autonomous region, which was released by the region's ecology and environment department in June, said that 85.3 percent of the region's buses are NEVs. Meanwhile, the proportion of non-fossil sources in Xizang's total energy consumption has exceeded 50 percent, ranking first nationwide.

During the January-June period this year, 63,222 new motor vehicles were registered in the region, a 4.6 percent year-on-year increase, with a growth rate 6.5 percentage points higher than the first quarter. Of those registrations, 4,682 were NEVs, or 263 percent year-on-year growth, Xizang Daily reported.

According to the region's department of commerce, the market share of NEVs in Xizang rose from 2.3 percent in 2021 to 24.4 percent currently. The top three best-selling vehicle models in the region are all NEVs, indicating that clean energy has become a vital driver for automobile consumption in the region.

NEVs manufactured in China are also gaining traction in foreign markets. Last year, 4,867 of them were exported from Tibetan ports to Nepal. The first quarter of this year saw a significant increase, with 1,623 NEVs exported to Nepal from Tibetan ports, a sixfold rise from the same period last year. Sedans and small passenger cars constitute more than 90 percent of the types of NEVs exported from Tibetan ports.

Along with the increase in NEV consumers and owners in the region, sellers have been working on improving after-sales services, including promoting more charging stations.

Tesla said it has established multiple charging stations and an authorized after-sales service center in the region, providing convenient services for vehicle owners. The EV manufacturer has set up eight supercharging stations and 15 destination charging stations in Xizang, covering 10 cities and providing support and assurance for electric vehicle owners traveling in the region.
