A textbook exhibition, a microcosm of the massive textbooks that Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) has compiled over the past 75 years since its founding, has opened at the university in the lead up to the grand celebration commemorating its founding anniversary on Saturday.
The exhibition showcases the foundational, indispensable contributions that the school has made to the country's foreign language education and foreign language talent cultivation, which directly relates to the developments of the country's diplomatic undertakings and foreign economic and trade exchanges over the past decades.
SISU has published foreign language textbooks from basic education to higher education in various forms, including printed textbooks, audio-visual textbooks and MOOC (Massive Open Online Course).
"For example, since 2000, teachers from the university have edited and participated in the compilation of nearly 1,000 textbooks, making profound contributions to accelerating the modernization of education, building a strong country in education and cultivating talent to take on the great task of national rejuvenation in the new era," said Wang Xuemei, who is in charge of the exhibition.
A string of reference books with extraordinary value and influence for English education in China has emerged from the school, she said. In 1960, the school compiled and published an English textbook for junior middle school students, which was the second set of such textbooks after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949.
