LOS ANGELES - At least one person was killed and three others were injured after two jets collided on the runway Monday afternoon at the Scottsdale Airport in the southwestern US state of Arizona, according to authorities and local media.

"A Learjet 35A veered off the runway after landing and crashed into a Gulfstream 200 business jet on the ramp at Scottsdale Municipal Airport in Arizona around 2:45 pm local time (GMT 2145) Monday," said the US Federal Aviation Association in a statement.

Mentioning the accident occurred upon arrival at runway 21, the Scottsdale Airport said in a Facebook post that "Fire Department is on scene assessing the situation".

Kelli Kuester, the aviation planning and outreach coordinator of the Scottsdale Airport, said that the airport runway is currently closed and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

Scottsdale Fire Department Captain Dave Folio said at a news conference that five people were involved in the crash, including one person dead at the scene, two others taken to local trauma centers, and another in stable condition at a hospital.

He confirmed that one person was still trapped, saying that work was being done to extricate "one soul out of one of the airplanes".
