MANILA -- Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos confirmed that a chartered jet carrying former President Rodrigo Duterte to the Netherlands took off on Tuesday night.

The plane is en route to The Hague in the Netherlands, Marcos told a press conference shortly after the plane exited Philippine airspace.

Marcos said that Duterte was earlier placed in government custody at Villamor Air Base in the Philippine capital after Duterte returned to Manila on Tuesday morning.

Duterte was detained on Tuesday morning on an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) over his "war on drugs" campaign, a move that Duterte questioned.

On Tuesday night, Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte arrived at the Villamor Air Base but failed to see her father.

Sara's younger sister, Veronica, said in a social media post that "They took my dad from us, put him on a plane, and wouldn't say where to."
