New plant species found in Jiangxi

Researchers have recently announced the discovery of a new plant species, Sedum orientalichinense, in East China's Jiangxi province. [Photo provided to chinadaily.com.cn]

It is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 6-18 centimeters, featuring semi-erect stems with 4-8 nodes and yellow petals. It blooms from June to July.

"This discovery challenges the long-standing misconception in the academic community that this group of plants belonged to a species unique to Japan," said Xiong Yu, a researcher at the nature reserve and co-author of the research paper.

It also underscores the importance of Jiangxi as a region rich in biodiversity, providing essential data for regional biodiversity conservation and taxonomic research, he added.
