Chinese and US military officials held talks in Shanghai on Wednesday and Thursday to discuss maritime and air safety, marking the latest round of discussions under the China-US Military Maritime Consultative Agreement.

Both sides engaged in "candid and constructive" exchanges on regional security developments since their last meeting, according to a statement from the People's Liberation Army Navy.

They also reviewed the implementation of the China-US Rules of Behavior for the Safety of Air and Maritime Encounters and discussed ways to improve maritime military security

China reiterated concerns over US military activity near its air and maritime zones, warning that reconnaissance operations, surveillance, and high-intensity exercises could lead to misunderstandings and pose risks to China's sovereignty and security.

Beijing said its military would continue to respond to "all dangerous provocations" in accordance with the law, vowing to safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights.
