Beijing Royal School hosted an enriching piano master class themed "Sino-Western Music Dialogue" on Dec 11, bringing together students with internationally acclaimed Belgian pianist and Young Steinway Artist, Tom De Beuckelaer, for in-depth exchanges.
De Beuckelaer, the only Young Steinway Artist from Belgium, is a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. He furthered his studies at the prestigious Imola International Piano Academy in Italy, under the tutelage of maestro Boris Petrushansky.
The event began with De Beuckelaer delivering a lecture outlining the development of piano music in both Chinese and Western traditions and analyzing their stylistic differences as well as cultural connotations. This was followed by one-on-one master class sessions, where three students performed Johann Sebastian Bach's Prelude and Fugue in G Major, the Chinese classic Colorful Clouds Chasing the Moon, and Franz Liszt's Liebestraum No 3 respectively. De Beuckelaer provided tailored guidance on aspects such as musical structure, tonal control and emotional expression.
Students noted that the face-to-face interaction with an international artist deepened their understanding of different musical cultures and further ignited their passion for music.
This master class is part of the "Music Masters on Campus" series, which fosters cultural exchange in music between China and the West, broadens students' international artistic horizons, and contributes to an enriching artistic atmosphere within the school.
