London vs Hangzhou: Settling the best Chinese food debate

chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2026-05-05 12:00

They call my hometown a "food desert", but I'm back to prove them wrong. After exploring the best of London and Hong Kong, I've returned to Hangzhou with my friend Jing to settle our bet once and for all: Can a Western food capital really rival the heart of Zhejiang cuisine?

In the series finale, I team up with local food experts Jenny and Amy Wang to navigate the full spectrum of Hangzhou's culinary scene. We start in the narrow alleyways of a viral neighborhood favorite, Jing Zhong Bang, before moving into the high-end innovation of Michelin-starred legends like Jie Xiang Lou and Xin Rong Ji.

We even revisit the simple childhood joy of a "Michelin-rated" street breakfast to see if luxury can ever truly beat tradition. Finally, I bring Jing to the world-renowned Jin Sha Ting at the Four Seasons to get her final verdict. Did I win the challenge?

This journey across three cities has been about more than just food—it's about heritage, identity, and the constant reinvention of culture. Thank you for following the "Chinese Menu: London V Hangzhou" series!
