China hopes the United States and Iran will sign the first-phase memorandum of understanding as scheduled, and calls on all relevant parties to commit to peace and resolve their issues through dialogue and negotiation, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Monday.

Lin made the remarks at a regular news conference when asked about US President Donald Trump's criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over Israel's reported attempts to interfere with negotiations, and its impact on regional peace efforts.

China will continue to act in the spirit of its four-point proposal and play a constructive role in helping to restore peace and tranquility in the Gulf region at the earliest date, Lin said.

When asked about China's involvement in the negotiations, Lin said China has been working toward an end to the conflict and a peaceful resolution since the outbreak of hostilities.

China's four-point proposal on promoting peace and stability in the Middle East reflects its consistent position and active efforts to promote peace, end conflict, advocate dialogue and resolve differences, he said.

The proposal has played an important role in further building international consensus and has been widely welcomed by countries in the region and the broader international community, Lin added.

China will continue to uphold fairness and justice, contribute its strength to lasting peace in the Middle East, and demonstrate its responsibility as a major country, he said.
