Their commitment extends beyond transportation. They feed the birds if needed and regularly rescue chicks that fall into the river. Using landing nets to gently lift the young birds, they avoid direct contact to prevent transferring human scent, which might lead the parent birds to abandon them.
Their journey into conservation began in 2020, when they rescued a drowning bird. Since then, their red ferry has become a familiar sight to the growing flocks of herons and egrets along the riverbanks. "From just a few dozen to what now seems like thousands," Deng noted, the bird population has flourished under their watchful eyes.
