Community-based elderly care is gaining ground in the Xizang autonomous region, where dozens of day-care centers and rural care facilities have been established to help seniors remain in their own communities while receiving daily support.

One example is the Chengguan district day-care center for the elderly in Lhasa, which was visited by a group of international media reporters on Monday.

Funded by the local government and operated by a private company, the center opened in September 2023. It serves older residents from 19 nearby communities, offering meals, nursing care, and recreational activities.

The center receives about 100 seniors each day on average, according to its operator.

By the end of 2025, Xizang had established 65 day-care centers for older people and 195 rural happiness homes, designed to support seniors with daily needs while enabling them to continue living in their own communities.
