Celebrating the universal language of mathematics

The announcement that Wang Hong and Deng Yu have been awarded the 2026 Fields Medal — becoming the first Chinese nationals to receive the prestigious honor — is a historic moment not only for Chinese mathematics but also for the global scientific community.

Their recognition is far more than an academic distinction. It stands as another powerful symbol of China's growing scientific excellence and a reminder that the pursuit of knowledge remains one of humanity's greatest shared endeavors.

At a time when the world is too often defined by rivalry and division, mathematics offers a different vision — one founded on beauty, rigor and the universal search for truth.

The Fields Medal, often described as the Nobel Prize of mathematics, is among the highest honors in the discipline. Awarded every four years to researchers under the age of 40, it recognizes exceptional originality and transformative contributions to one of humanity's oldest and most demanding intellectual pursuits.

That Wang Hong, born in 1991, and Deng Yu, born in 1989, have both received the distinction in the same year reflects the extraordinary vitality of contemporary Chinese mathematics and the maturity of the country's scientific ecosystem.

Wang Hong studied at Peking University before pursuing advanced research in France and the United States.

She is now affiliated with the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques in France and New York University. Likewise, Deng Yu studied at Peking University before continuing his education at MIT and Princeton University. He is now a professor at the University of Chicago.

Their achievement is not an isolated success but the culmination of decades of sustained investment in education, research, and innovation. China has gradually built one of the world's most dynamic scientific communities.

From quantum information and artificial intelligence to space exploration, biotechnology, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing, Chinese researchers are helping shape the future of global science.

The success of these two mathematicians demonstrates that the discipline underpinning so many scientific advances has likewise become an area in which China ranks among the world's leading nations.

Mathematics, however, possesses a distinctive quality that sets it apart from many other human endeavors. A mathematical theorem belongs to no nation. Once proved, it immediately becomes part of humanity's common intellectual heritage.

A discovery made in Beijing enriches researchers in Paris, São Paulo, Nairobi, or New York just as naturally as one made in Cambridge or Princeton benefits scholars in China. Scientific knowledge is never diminished by sharing; it grows through exchange.

This universal character gives mathematics a profound moral significance, reminding us that cooperation often proves more enduring than competition.

The accomplishments of Wang Hong and Deng Yu therefore deserve to be celebrated not only as national achievements but also as contributions to human knowledge itself. Every major mathematical breakthrough expands our collective understanding of the universe.

Every elegant proof opens new intellectual pathways whose practical applications may one day transform technology, medicine, communications, and countless other aspects of modern life.

There is also a deeper lesson to be found in mathematics: its intimate relationship with beauty. Throughout history, mathematicians have described their greatest discoveries in aesthetic rather than practical terms.

They speak of elegance, harmony, symmetry, and simplicity. A beautiful proof possesses an inner coherence that inspires admiration much like a masterpiece of art or a sublime musical composition. Mathematics reminds us that beauty is not merely an ornament of truth but one of its most faithful companions.

This shared appreciation of beauty has the power to unite people across cultures. Scientific inquiry transcends languages, ideologies, and political systems because it is guided by universal principles: curiosity, intellectual honesty, respect for evidence, and the willingness to revise one's understanding in light of new discoveries. These values belong to no single civilization; they belong to humanity.

The recognition of Wang Hong and Deng Yu will undoubtedly inspire a new generation of young Chinese students to pursue mathematics and scientific research. Yet their influence will extend far beyond China. Their careers remind aspiring researchers everywhere that excellence is achieved through perseverance, imagination, and an unwavering commitment to truth.

At a time when international relations often appear increasingly fragmented, science continues to build bridges. Laboratories collaborate across continents. Ideas travel faster than borders can contain them. Equations speak a language understood in every country. The scientific spirit remains one of humanity's greatest forces for dialogue, cooperation and mutual respect.

China's two new Fields Medalists are therefore more than brilliant mathematicians. They embody the remarkable rise of a nation whose scientific capabilities continue to expand while reminding us of something even more fundamental: science is a common human adventure.

Through their achievements, we celebrate not only China's growing contribution to global knowledge but also the universal language of mathematics — a language through which beauty, reason, and the pursuit of truth unite humanity.
