Spark Hub ignites creative spirit of OPCs
At No 130 Gongqing Road in the Yangpu district of Shanghai, a community has been established for one-person company entrepreneurs.
Called Spark Hub, the community is equipped with subsidized apartments, 104 fixed workstations, 24 shared workstations, shared meeting and livestreaming rooms, photocopying equipment, water bars and other facilities.
Jointly built by Yangpu district and ByteDance cloud platform Volcano Engine, Spark Hub is located in a converted factory building and covers an area of around 1,500 square meters.
Tu Kehuan, deputy head of the industry department of the development and reform commission of Yangpu district, said: "The name 'Spark Hub' symbolizes the spark burst from the collision between the industrial ecology of Yangpu district and the artificial intelligence capability of Volcano Engine."
Gao Jianhuan, founder of Shanghai Huanliu Shiguang Digital Technology Co Ltd, is among the first batch of entrepreneurs to enter Spark Hub. He started his business in 2024, and thought that being an OPC would be cost-saving and highly-efficient.
"I am really enjoying the convenience brought by Spark Hub. I am able to use the work tools of Volcano Engine, which is practical for entrepreneurs. In terms of daily life, the apartment costs 1,000 yuan ($148.2) per month, and the surroundings are very convenient. There are no worries," he said.
For Gao, one other key benefit of entering Spark Hub is that he makes like-minded friends. He first met community friends on July 2, when he moved in. "I often encounter other entrepreneurs in the co-working space and some of them have technical backgrounds which I can learn from. We complement each other in terms of capabilities," he said.
Huang Jun, founder of Shanghai Molimao Information Technology Co Ltd, agreed, "As a game company founder, I am happy to see that there are game sector entrepreneurs on the second floor of Spark Hub. Any confusion in the development process can be addressed there. We offer each other suggestions and have complementary advantages."
To empower OPC entrepreneurs, Spark Hub has established a "Partnership" program, which connects the entire ecosystem of services from creative generation to market transformation. Relying on the innovation ecology of Volcano Engine, the community provides support measures such as subsidies for artificial intelligence toolsets and vertical agent applications. It also provides training guidance, creates multiple events, cooperates with relevant ecological partners of TikTok, along with its Chinese counterpart Douyin, to launch special incentive plans, and provides entrepreneurs with opportunities such as workstreaming, template library release and business docking.
The OPC community has shifted from "physical space competition" to "ecological capability competition", and whether it can introduce large factory resources, connect with real orders and lower the threshold for entrepreneurship has become the key, market insiders said.
"Spark Hub offers practical service and resources, especially token resources, saving a lot of process time and basic costs. In addition, I made a lot of friends who offered me good ideas to start my business. My mind has been broadened. In the future, I hope to take root in Spark Hub, integrate into the community innovation ecosystem and make the project better," said Lin Jingyi, founder of Rongzen (Shanghai) Internet Technology Co Ltd.
