The symbolism surrounding Fan's European journey echoes the broader history of table tennis as a vehicle for international exchange.

The term "ping-pong diplomacy" became synonymous with sport's ability to open doors and strengthen connections between countries.

Germany and China have developed their own long history of exchanges in the sport. Since the German national table tennis team first traveled to China in 1983, the two countries have maintained links through training and competition. Today, Chinese coaches and players work at many German clubs.

Wolfgang Doerner, CEO of the German Table Tennis Association, has described table tennis as a bridge between Germany and China.

"If we can share stories about Chinese players in Germany and German players in China, there are so many great experiences we can bring to the people of both nations," he said. "We are absolutely open to establishing new ways of collaboration."

Doerner said around 16 million people in Germany are interested in table tennis, 3 million play recreationally, and about 550,000 play through some 10,000 clubs.

Fan's presence may draw even more people to the sport, while giving Chinese supporters another window into Germany.

For Preuss, that is where the deeper significance of Fan's move lies.

"Sport is always building bridges, bridges between cultures and nations," he said.

Preuss said such exchanges are ultimately about people, and what they can learn from each other.

Back at City Hall, Keller highlighted Fan's achievements, from his former world No 1 ranking and multiple world titles to his Olympic men's singles gold at Paris 2024.

"Now, after so many years at the very top of international table tennis, you have chosen Dusseldorf as your new home, and we could not be happier about that decision," the mayor said.

For Fan, however, the focus remains straightforward.

"I think it's a new chapter in my career," he said.

With the Bundesliga bringing together many strong players, Fan sees the competition as a chance to learn from others and reach an even higher level.

"I'm very happy I can join Bundesliga and compete with the top players," he said. "I also want to improve myself, I want to keep fighting."
