Electric vehicle charging facilities surge 39.6% to over 24m units

The total number of electric vehicle charging facilities across China exceeded 24.22 million units by the end of August, marking a robust 39.6 percent year-on-year increase, according to the latest official data released by the National Energy Administration on Wednesday.

Public charging installations expanded steadily, climbing 19.5 percent year-on-year to 5.16 million units. The rated power capacity of the nation's public charging network reached 262 million kilowatts, with the average power per charging gun standing at about 50.69 kW, said the administration.

The consistent rise in average capacity reflects ongoing industry efforts to deploy higher-efficiency, fast-charging infrastructure to meet the surging operational demands of commercial fleets and long-distance intercity travelers.

Meanwhile, growth in private charging facilities maintained an even faster pace, driven by expanding domestic new energy vehicle ownership and streamlining installation procedures in residential communities.

Private charging facilities climbed 46.3 percent year-on-year to more than 19.06 million units by the end of August. The total registered power capacity for these private installations reached 163 million kilovolt-amperes.

The sustained expansion of China's charging network provides essential support for the rapid proliferation of NEVs, serving as a critical cornerstone for the nation's green transportation transition and power grid modernization.

As distributed renewable energy continues to expand, authorities and utilities are accelerating the integration of intelligent charging networks and bi-directional vehicle-to-grid technologies to maintain grid resilience while supporting high-quality green growth.
