Dagger Society (Xiaodaohui), a landmark Chinese dance drama that once sparked a nationwide craze, will return to the stage at the Majestic Theatre from Oct 30 to Nov 1.
Staged by Shanghai Opera House to mark its 70th anniversary, the revival is a headline offering of the 25th China Shanghai International Arts Festival.
Created in 1959 to mark the 10th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the work dramatizes the real 1853 Shanghai uprising against imperialist and feudal oppression. Told in seven episodes in the manner of a classical Chinese novel, it fuses Chinese classical dance, the martial conventions of Chinese opera, Chinese martial arts and Jiangnan folk dance, and is famed for highlight pieces such as Bow Dance and Shield Dance and for Shang Yi's score, whose overture has long been a classic of Chinese orchestral music.
Performed over 300 times, it was filmed in 1960 and named a Classic Chinese Dance Work of the 20th Century in 1994.
The revival is directed by Ma Tao, Sun Peng, Zhang Fan and Wang Tiantian. Working from archive footage, historical designs, and the guidance of original cast members Xu Senzhong and Qiang Liyue, the team keeps the original's spirit and storyline intact while refining it for today's audiences. Shang's melodies are preserved, with the orchestration re-balanced to strengthen symphonic voices alongside live Chinese instruments. The design recreates the uprising's Dianchun Hall headquarters through multimedia within a realist, historically grounded staging.
"Seven decades on, we honor our lineage and renew it in practice," Zhao Lei, Party secretary and executive vice president of Shanghai Opera House, said. "Young creative energy revitalizes the core of an enduring classic."
