Making room for elephants

Malaysia's conservationists fight to save Borneo's endangered giants

Updated: 2026-11-03 09:53

Members of the Seratu Aatai team install a GPS collar around the neck of a female Bornean elephant in Sukau on Aug 24. JAN HENNOP/AFP

The collar alerts villagers if the elephant strays too close.

It is also key to a program Farina is designing to create "corridors" for elephants roaming a fragmented landscape of virgin forest patches, hemmed in by vast oil palm plantations and villages.

Farina has studied these elephants for years, earning her the nickname "Borneo's elephant whisperer" and the Whitley Award for conservationists.
