This year marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Peru. During a recent trip to Peru for the third China-Latin America and Caribbean States Roundtable on Human Rights, we sat down with Eduardo Arana Ysa, former prime minister of Peru.
From China-Peru relations and the development of Chancay Port to global human rights governance and cooperation on AI, hear his perspective on bilateral ties and the development opportunities facing the Global South.
Here are his key insights from the conversation:
• On AI, Arana said Peru will choose the partnerships that best serve its national interests. "Cooperation with a country does not mean submission. It does not mean becoming a colony."
• On bilateral ties, he said China-Peru relations have advanced steadily since 1971, with cooperation expanding across trade, culture and investment. He described Chancay Port as one of the latest major achievements of this partnership.
• On the right to development, Arana said China offers "an example and a model to learn from". He pointed to China's lifting of 800 million people out of poverty as an example of how progress in education, healthcare and other basic areas can improve lives.
