Overview:
Founded in 1898, Peking University (PKU) is the first national university in Chinese modern history. Peking University consists of five faculties: Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, Medicine, and Information and Engineering. The University has 47 colleges and departments, and offers 105 undergraduate programs, 291 graduate programs, and 249 doctoral programs. While emphasizing basic sciences, the university has paid special attention to development of applied sciences. In October 2010, there were 14,810 undergraduates, 12,082 postgraduates and 6,838 doctoral candidates. The campus has approximately 2,326 long-term international students from 80 countries, and 1,836 Degree-Seeking students.
Peking University is famous for its outstanding research facilities and highly-qualified teachers and researchers with extensive research interests and profound knowledge. The University has 5,866 full-time faculties, of whom 1,701 are professors and 2,037 are associate professors, 60 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science, and 8 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Peking University has 11 national key laboratories, 46 state key laboratories, 2 national engineering research centers and 8 affiliated hospitals and health centers.
The Peking University library is the largest university library in Asia, with a collection of 7.7 million books, and Chinese and foreign journals and newspapers. The library serves as a comprehensive modern information center.
Peking University emphasizes academic exchanges with foreign universities, research institutes and multinational enterprises, signing agreements with more than 200 universities in 50 countries and regions.
Programs:
International students have the following options of study at Peking University:
(1)Undergraduate or graduate degree-granting programs
(2)Visiting students program (non-degree granting)
(3)Pre-university program
(4)Short-term language courses or Chinese studies programs
Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good health, with a valid passport, above the age of 18, and should abide by Chinese regulations of Peking University. They should respect Chinese social customs.
Undergraduate program:
Students are required to complete the curriculum within 4 to 6 years and fulfill designated number of credits. Successful graduates will receive a graduation certificate along with bachelor's degree.
Master's Program:
Students are required to complete the curriculum within 2-3 years, fulfill designated number of credits, complete the master's thesis and defend it in front of a panel of experts. Successful graduates will receive a graduation certificate along with the Master's degree.
Doctorate Program:
Students are required to complete the curriculum within 4-6 years (in normal circumstances), fulfill designated number of credits, conduct research, complete the doctoral thesis and defend it in front of a panel of experts. Successful graduates will receive a graduation certificate with the doctoral degree.
Senior Visiting Students Program:
Candidates must have at least a Master's degree. A professor supervises the student as part of the accepting college or department to conduct research on a specific subject. The program is one year, however upon request the student can be considered for an extension. Upon graduation, the student will receive a certificate of achievement.
General Visiting Students Program:
Candidates must have completed at least one year of undergraduate study at their own university. Options are available for joining undergraduate courses or enhancing proficiency in Chinese language.
Research Scholars:
Candidate must have a doctoral degree or title of Associate Professor or higher. Research Scholars will be given access to the school's resources and be allowed to collaborate with professors to conduct specific areas of research. Most successful candidates have established prior contacts with professors in their particular fields, anyone wishing to come for a Research Scholars is advised to find a supervisor in advance. Research scholars enjoy flexible application dates and durations of research. Applications can be submitted anytime, and duration of study varies from one month, one semester to one year.
PKU Summer School International
The fourth Peking University Summer School International will run on July 2-27, 2012. Our program integrates the best of Peking University's teaching resources and provides a stage for communication and learning between global students. Our goal is to develop students' global outlook and enhance their international competitiveness. More than 110 students from Cambridge, Oxford, Yale, UC (University of California), ANU (The Australian National University), and NUS (National University of Singapore) joined our program in the summer of 2010.
The program offers ten content courses and one Chinese language course. Courses will be related to philosophy, economics, public policy, sociology, culture, literature and music, which will be taught in English by prominent professors and renowned experts of Peking University. Experienced teachers will instruct the International College of Chinese Language Studies (PKU) that is offered to students with a primary Chinese level. All courses will be held on campus. Students will receive an official transcript from Peking University upon completion.
Besides courses in the classroom, students will take cultural visits and social practices. They can experience the "Democracy and Science" traditions of Peking University and make linguistic, and academic exchanges with PKU students face to face as well, experience the rich academic atmosphere and colorful campus life. Scheduled visits arranged include places of historical relics, such as Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Great Wall, as well as exhibitions, such as the Beijing Opera. Activities would enrich their spare time and deepen a better understanding of Chinese culture.
LSE-PKU Summer School
The London School of Economics and Political Science and Peking University have run the LSE-PKU Summer School in Beijing every summer since 2004.
The two-week English-language international Summer School offers university-level courses in subjects including economics, management, international relations, media and law, with a focus on China and Asia.
Faculty from Peking University and LSE teach the program, which attracts students and professionals from around the world: over 340 students from 49 nationalities in 2011. More than a fifth of participants are graduate professionals working in a wide range of related fields, including business, finance, public policy, and international affairs, NGOs, media and law. Students who attended in 2011 came from 165 universities and other higher education institutions.
Participants take one intensive course for the duration of the summer school, typically comprising of four hours of lectures each morning and two hours of classes each afternoon – total of 48 contact hours over two weeks.
The course will be assessed, including a final examination, and successful students are awarded a certificate and transcript.
The LSE-PKU Summer School is not a Chinese language course. However, LSE-PKU Summer School participants are eligible to enroll in Chinese language courses at the prestigious Language School at Peking University. Applications for the 2012 LSE-PKU Summer School will open in January 2012.
