Prosecutors in Beijing said the city has witnessed a rise in credit card fraud in recent years.
Judges in the city presided over more than 1,000 cases between 2010 and 2012, authorities in the capital said.
Of all 157 trials held at Xicheng District People's Court last year, more than 90 percent were related to credit card fraud, according to Lu Junzhao, the prosecutor in charge of financial cases.
In most cases suspects ran up huge debts on victims' accounts, he said, adding that some banks are failing to provide strict supervision of cardholders.
The surge in the number of reported crimes is due to the lack of awareness among many people, Lu said.
