There was an opening ceremony for the 4th Qianmen Historical and Cultural Festival, at Beijing’s Tianle Grand Opera Theatre, on Qianmen Dajie, on Aug 7, with a poetry-reading salon where famous Chinese actors and reciters were invited to read their works to the public.
The Qianmen Historical and Cultural Festival is one the Dongcheng district‘s most important activities. Qianmen Dajie (thoroughfare) is a block-long street in classical Chinese style and architecture for culture and folk arts, with a guild hall and Peking Opera house.
The head of the district, Niu Qingshan, explains that renovation began on the street back in 2003 as one of the largest, most expensive projects ever undertaken there.
Niu went on to say, “We designed the biggest, most intelligent underground parking system, which will rally improve the poor infrastructure in the downtown area. The 1st-phase facilities are now in use.”
To make shopping more convenient, the parking lot is free from 12:00 noon to midnight, within 6 hours per day starting from Aug 7. The charge is 6 yuan ($0.98) per hour for extra hours.
The 19-day historical-cultural festival celebratees the 860th anniversary of Beijing, and, has unique, special activities to promote traditional culture as well as modern commercial activities, and includes a shopping festival, Taiwan folk arts show, and a drama, Qianmen People.
Businesses in Qianmen Dajie’s Taiwan Cultural and Business Zone will also entertain visitors with some delicious local food and innovative products made by Taiwan’s ethnic minorities, and there will be Taiwan fork arts at the night fair.
The drama “Qianmen People” will be staged once a day, Aug 21 to 25, and visitors can get a free ticket from culture.bjdch.gov.cn , the district’s official website.
The 845-meter street also has 15 large 3D paintings on display, representing old and renowned shops with traditional culture. Customers can get some discounts by taking photos of the paintings and putting them on microblog or Wechat, China’s most popular messaging and social media app.
There are also special discounts at 50 area shops, and shoppers who spend at least 500 yuan in a day will get a cable car ticket for an easier view of beautiful Qianmen.
