The owner of a massive rooftop structure in Beijing missed a deadline to demolish it, but authorities said the demolition had encountered technical problems.
On Aug 12, Haidian district's chengguan, or urban patrol officers, issued a notice ordering the owner, Zhang Biqing, to dismantle the structure, covering an area of 800 square meters, on top of the Renji Shanzhuang community.
Zhang started the demolition on Aug 15 and the project was still underway, so the government will not initiate a compulsory demolition, said Dai, a spokesman for Haidian chengguan.
The chengguan authority will make sure the demolition work is conducted in a fast and orderly manner and some chengguan officers will also stay in the community to ensure the safety of the building and residents, Dai said.
The illegal structure, adorned with trees and bushes, has a glass house, vine creepers and massive imitation boulders. Neighbors have complained about pipe and wall damage, according to a report in the Beijing Morning Post.
