The US engineering giant Emerson Electric Co held a press conference, in Beijing, on Oct 16, to describe its charity project in China, which it started in 2009, to improve people's livelihoods and make areas where it operates more appealing both to its employees and the people living there.
The company says the Emerson China Charitable Program is part of its social responsibility and is based on an "In China, for China" strategy, and that there has been a good reception for its work, such as the Guangdong Ruyuan Highlands Minority Housing Rebuilding Project, Angel and Sunshine Program to help children with congenital heart disease get treatment, the New Great Wall Educational Sponsorship Program, and the Water Cellar for Mothers Program.
The company's headquarters for China handles the overall planning and asks all of their businesses across the country to find ways to improve the charity projects at the local level. The projects cover everything, from humanitarian relief to education to technologically and engineering, and infrastructure.
And, the general manager of Emerson China, Zhao Dadong, explains, they are not limited to just donating money, but instead form an organic system that produces the desired effect, with follow-up management conducted at the project site to carry out Emerson’s social responsibility more effectively.
Deng Qinghua, head of HR for Emerson China, adds that they not only provided financial support for children with heart disease, but also closely followed their physical and mental health after treatment through the Angel and Sunshine Program. And they asked for volunteers to visit the kids to give them greater confidence to face life's difficulties.
Deng went on to say that this focus on civic affairs and the cumulative effect of the projects are two characteristics of the charity program and they consider the improvement of life in their communities very important. They encourage all employees to contribute to local affairs, such as education in backward areas, with the Project Hope Education Program being one example. This program made it possible for students from poor families in Sichuan and Guangdong provinces to complete their primary school education.
And, in the case of their New Great Wall Educational Sponsorship Program, recipients took part in voluntary teaching programs and a field trip for the Water Cellar Program, which extended the reach and influence of the various projects.
