Chen, born in 1926, lives a frugal life in a house that hasn't been renovated since 1988. He spent the 280,000 yuan ($45,119) he received from the compensation for his house's demolition buying children's books for 66 primary schools in the Wenchuan Earthquake disaster area in 2008.
