On July 6, 2014, Su Shilong undertook his last rescue as the security deputy of the Beijing Crab Island Resort. A couple had fallen into a well, and Su jumped in after them, braving the high methane concentrations. His last act was to tie his rope around the unconscious husband and demand the support team to pull him up.

Su himself passed away from the methane.
He had just visited his hometown, helping his family build a house. He was in a cheery mood upon his return to Beijing, telling security to add one more to the night patrol due to the flooding season.
His officers had warned him of its dangers, how humans cannot breathe in it. Help was on the way, and yet Su chose to go down immediately in spite of this fact.
"This can't wait!" A crowd had already gathered, and despite their discouragements, he tore off his top and jumped into the well, on his own.

Another time in winter 2012, a thin layer of ice had formed on top of Crab Island's lake. Su was on patrol with a few of his friends when a tourist fell through the ice.
"I was better at swimming, but he just dashed right ahead of me and jumped into the water," said another patrol who was with him.
But Su safely escorted the tourist ashore. "If it happens again, I'll do the same thing," the intrepid security guard said.
His monthly salary never went above 3,500 yuan ($565). Even so, he willingly lent money to friends and colleagues who needed it.
Su's memorial gathered hundreds of colleagues and friends, mourning the loss of such an altruistic soul. Not everyone had known him, but they all loved him.

A 1.7 million yuan pension has been given to Su's family. The resort's CEO himself vouched to personally bear all of his two-year-old daughter's education fees in the future.
"Leave the hero no worries," he says. "This way his spirit will always stay on Crab Island, Beijing, and the world forever."
The husband and wife Su helped save are well on their way to recovery.
