Professor Liu Hong and her team involved with Yuegong-1, or Moon Palace at the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
From 2004 to 2014, Liu, chief designer of Yuegong-1, led her team to develop China's first and the world's third bioregenerative life support system. Currently, there are 23 team members, but another 26 graduates with doctoral or master's degree have also contributed greatly to the success of the experimental research, which is of great significance to China's manned space exploration and human self-sufficiency in space.
On May 20, 2014, three Chinese volunteers completed a 105-day airtight test in the 500-cubic-meter module, where they simulated plant cultivation on the moon, and sustained their life by eating grain, vegetables and yellow mealworm they raised. Liu said, "Dozens of talented personnel have involved themselves in the lab-related research. Some have become famous, but many remain unknown. However, all of us feel happy, simply because we don't do it for fame, but for our common aspiration."
