A man surnamed Luo was sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined 200,000 yuan ($32,660) for smuggling ivory and leopard skins, Beijing Times reported on Saturday.
Luo left Guangzhou for Burundi in December and while there spent $2,800 on 39 kg of ivory products and two leopard skins. He was with the items at a customs check in Beijing Capital International Airport on Chinese New Year's Eve. An investigation uncovered a history of illicit dealing in rare animals and animal products, and he was tried and convicted of smuggling.
