Beijing announced at its work conference for sports on Feb 4 that it plans to develop winter sports and campus football when it is bidding for the 2022 Winter Olympics and preparing for the 2015 World Athletics Championships.
Beijing has built 15 fitness clubs in communities and around 8,000 sports facilities since 2014 with more than 10 million people participating in physical exercise.
There were around 400 sports contests held last year, including the men's curling championship, the Beijing International Marathon and the 2014 Tour of Beijing. A total of 50 athletes from the city attended the Inchon Asian Games with 14 gold medals; 10 won world championships in other games.
Sun Xuecai, vice-director general of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports, said that Beijing will build an indoor speed skating rink for the 2020 Winter Olympics and an ice sports training base.
The city will develop traditional schools for holding sports events and training winter sports such as figure skating and ice hockey, Sun continued.
There will be several conferences for the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) before the World Athletics Championships take place in August.
In 2014, the Beijing government spent 50.4 million yuan ($8.06 million) on developing 129 student teams and 460 grassroots training schools for football, basketball and volleyball.
Wang Dingdong, a member of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Education, said that football training will be a major task in 2015 with the establishment of the "school football leading group", Chinese Football Association and three training centers for Chinese juniors.
