A steel building has a steel structure for internal support and for exterior cladding, as opposed to steel-framed buildings, which generally use other materials for floors, walls and external covering. Steel buildings have been used for many purposes, including storage, working and living spaces.
Steel buildings are easy to modify and offer design flexibility.
Four iconic steel structure buildings are also Beijing landmarks:
National Stadium (Bird's Nest)
Construction started in 2003, and the stadium was opened to the public in June 2008. It was built with 110,000 metric tons of steel and can accommodate 100,000 people for sporting and entertainment events.
China Central Television Headquarters Building
The new headquarters building of CCTV, which is 234 meters high, was completed and passed certification in June 2012. It is located in the central business district of Beijing.
Sightseeing Towers in Beijing Olympic Forest Park
The project has five independent sightseeing towers. The highest is 246.8 meters, which makes it the sixth-highest sightseeing tower in China, and the 22nd in the world. It opened to visitors in August.
National Center for the Performing Arts
The titanium and glass dome is surrounded by an artificial lake. It contains an opera house, concert hall and theater. Altogether, the three performance venues can accommodate nearly 5,500 people.
