A dragon boat racing took place at the Jinhai Lake of Beijing's Pinggu district on June 13-14, as warm-up for the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu) this Saturday.
The 2015 Jinhai Lake International Dragon Boat Race had 21 teams from Beijing and 18 foreign teams participating. Foreign teams from Australia, Iran, Russia, Hong Kong and Macao took part in the Men's and Women's 500 meter straight racetrack speed races last Sunday.
Starring decorated boats with intricate designs, the deafening sound of gongs and drums, and the foam of breaking waves, the competition is a combination of fun and a storied culture.
Dragon-boat racing is long held tradition in China and it increases people's awareness of Chinese traditional festivals. This activity has been listed as part of the national cultural heritage.
The venue of the race - Jinhai Lake Aquatic Sports Center - is the biggest aquatic sports site in Beijing. People can enjoy a variety of water entertainment at the center, such as sightseeing boat tours and speed boat, water scooter, and self-driving boat rentals.
The event was organized by the Beijing Municipal Sports Bureau, Pinggu district government, Beijing Sports Federation, and The Universal Chinese Sport Association.
